Senior Network Engineer

Job Description Summary

The Senior Network Engineer position is responsible for the design, implementation and operational support of network connectivity and project initiatives involving the Fragomen global network. Senior Network Engineers provide technical leadership to the firm and mentorship to members of the IT Operations teams. Senior Network Engineers ensure stability, best practices engineering, and detailed troubleshooting disciplines are applied to firm systems. The Senior Network Engineer position encompasses responsibility for activities, including but not limited to wide area network connectivity technologies, network design, routing techniques and protocols, Firewall technologies, design and administration, Quality of Service and traffic prioritization, IP address administration, LAN/ Wan/ SAN hardware, routers, switches and collaboration related technologies. Technical responsibility will extend to all officers of the firm and may require travel to any or all offices.

Essential duties:

  • Assess risks and impacts arising from a business disruption and make decisions and determine actions independently and expediently to eliminate those risks and ensure the continuity of business.
  • Evaluate, critique, and potentially supervise the performance of Network Engineers.
  • Understanding of firm and industry best practices and business requirements to gather data for analysis by conducting interview and independent research.
  • Analyzing, planning, testing, and implementation of the wide area and local area network connectivity.
  • Design, implement and ensure that systems achieve 100% uptime 24/7/365 operational availability.
  • Act as technical project manager and responsible for project related communications to stakeholders.
  • Fully resolve problems with firm systems and technologies
  • Participate in making decisions and determining actions independently and expediently to eliminate risks and ensure the continuity of business.
  • Analyzing, planning, testing, and implementation of the wide area and local area network connectivity.
  • Actively pursuing new technologies to improve effectiveness and efficiency of firm systems.
  • Act to support all technical projects arising from the project Management office (PMO)
  • Performing root cause analysis on systems issues and determine recommended solutions to resolve problems.
  • Determine and decide when to escalate problems to vendors and ensuring resolution and reporting of resolution to stakeholders.
  • Provide training and mentoring on problem identification, analysis and troubleshooting techniques and best practices to Operations teams.
  • Design, implement, test and maintain business continuity and disaster recovery solutions, processes and procedures.
  • Maintaining documentation of network, processes, procedures, troubleshooting guides and change management logs.
  • Flexible to work outside of normal business hours as required.


Core Knowledge Requirements:

  • Wide Area Network transports including MPLS.
  • Storage Area Networks.
  • Knowledge of common protocols such as SNMP, HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, NTP LDAP, KERBEROUS, RADIUS and FTP.
  • Working knowledge of VPNs and enterprise gateway devices.
  • Ensure compliance to security standards and policy.
  • Design solutions, configure or support firewalls, content engines, intruder detection or prevention system.
  • Review network designs and evaluate compliance to applicable security standards.
  • Enterprise class routing protocols BGP, EIGRP
  • Converged Networks carrying voice, video and data.
  • Traffic prioritization, including Class of Service and Qos.
  • Knowledgeable of Cisco Communication Manager (CCM), messaging, presence and conferencing solution.
  • Knowledgeable of Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), Cisco Unified Border Element (CUBE), CUCM IM & Presence Manager, Cisco Unity Messaging.
  • Cisco router, switching and wireless hardware technologies.
  • Enterprise switching and wireless hardware technologies.
  • WAN optimization / traffic shaping technologies.
  • Network monitoring and reporting tools.
  • Use of network troubleshooting tools including network sniffers.
  • Compuware application performance analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of WAN/Lan traffic requirements for a MS windows based applications environment.
  • Business continuity and disaster recovery disciplines
  • Alerting, monitoring and response disciplines
  • Data center operations and disciplines

Function Specific Systems Knowledge Requirements:

  • WAN transports & Services (MPLS, SONET, Internet – Multicarrier & Redundancy)
  • Routing (Cisco)
  • Switching (Cisco, LLDP)
  • Wireless (Cisco, HP/Aruba Networks)
  • Storage Area Networks (Cisco, Pure, EMC)
  • VoIP Transport (Cisco, Avaya)
  • WAN Optimization (Cisco, Silverpeak)
  • Network / Application tools (Compuware, Sniffer, WireShark)
  • General Network (IP schema, Video, Cabling, DHCP)



  • Cisco CCIE certified a plus
  • Experience managing converged enterprise networks in a large, multi-office environment. Typically acquired through 7 or more years of experience.
  • Demonstrable troubleshooting abilities.
  • Strong understanding of technical networking.
  • Strong planning and analysis skills.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
