You may have noticed that the Commerce Department is getting tougher. Specifically, regulators with the department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has been cracking down on exporters who ship unlicensed products and technology outside the U.S. BIS has been especially aggressive when those exports wind up in countries facing either sanctions or embargoes imposed by the U.S.  Checking out cases brought by BIS since 2003, you can’t help but notice the huge spike in fines companies are now facing for knowingly or even inadvertently violating export controls. read more
