Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership to Be Implemented
December 28, 2018
The situation
On December 30, 2018, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is expected be implemented in the following countries: Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and Singapore.
A closer look
The CPTPP is one of the largest free trade agreements in the world and offers qualifying business visitors, investors and skilled workers reciprocal access to each other’s economic and labor markets. Key immigration provisions are outlined here.
Background
The CPTPP is a revised version of the original Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and includes the same member countries as the TPP with the exception of the United States, which withdrew from TPP negotiations in January 2017.
Looking ahead
Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, and Peru still need to complete their domestic ratification process and identify an implementation date.
Fragomen will report on relevant developments as they occur.
