Update May 8, 2024: The Federal Police has resumed issuing RNM Cards for foreign nationals.
The Federal Police has temporarily stopped issuing RNM Cards (Brazilian identification cards) for foreign nationals until further notice while it transitions to a new printing provider. In the meantime, foreign nationals should use their valid RNM Protocol (Brazilian temporary identification document) that was issued to them when they registered with the Federal Police after entering Brazil under a consular work visa or after filing an in-country change of status application, as their identification document in Brazil. These foreign nationals must have a valid RNM Card (or Protocol in the meantime) to exit and re-enter Brazil and to complete certain administrative tasks in Brazil such as setting up a bank account. The RNM Protocol is typically valid for 90 days and can be renewed until the RNM card is issued. Fragomen is contacting affected clients to assist with RNM Protocol renewals as applicable and is monitoring the situation to report on relevant developments.
