The governments of Brazil and Japan have announced a three-year reciprocal visa waiver agreement, effective September 30, 2023. As a result, the visa requirement that was set to be reinstated on October 1, 2023, for nationals of Japan entering Brazil will not apply. Instead, nationals of Japan will continue to be visa exempt when entering Brazil for tourism, business, sports activities, or artistic performances, or when transiting through Brazilian airports. By way of background, in March 2023, the government of Brazil announced it was revoking visa exemptions for nationals of Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States as of October 1, 2023. As of now, nationals from Australia, Canada and the United States will still need to obtain an e-visa for entry starting on October 1, 2023. Additionally, effective September 30, 2023, nationals of Brazil will be visa exempt for stays of up to 90 days in Japan for tourism and business and will no longer need to apply for a Temporary Visitor Visa (TVV) at a Japanese embassy or consulate.
