Bulgaria: Reminder for EU Blue Card Holders to Register with the Public Health Insurance System

EU Blue Card holders are reminded of their requirement to register with the public health insurance system, regardless of whether they first acquired their EU Blue Card before or after January 29, 2023. Furthermore, according to recent tax authority guidance, individuals who first acquired their EU Blue Card prior to January 29, 2023 need only register their status as ‘health insured’ with the national health insurance system; while individuals who first acquired their card after January 29, 2023 must not only register their ‘health insured’ status, but also file a health insurance declaration and pay health insurance contributions for the period between the issuance of the Blue Card and the applicant’s employment start date.
