The government of Canada has announced it will relax work experience requirements for caregivers applying for permanent residence under the Home Child Care Provider and the Home Support Worker pilot programs. Starting April 30, 2023, the amount of work experience in Canada required for a caregiver to qualify for permanent residence will be reduced to 12 months, down from the current requirement of 24 months. The change will be retroactive to caregivers who have already applied for permanent residence. Furthermore, the government will reserve some spaces under the existing caregiver residence pathways for caregivers who already have work experience in Canada from a previous work permit to be able to apply for permanent residence in Canada.
