Costa Rica: New Resolution Changes Processing Times and Renewal Restrictions for Passports

The General Immigration Directorate (DGME) in Costa Rica has published a resolution that temporarily increases the mandated government processing time for the issuance of biometric passports for Costa Rican nationals to 30 calendar days, up from the previous 15 days. Additionally, the new resolution states that the DGME can reject passport renewal applications from applicants whose current passport is valid for more than one year. Previously, applicants could submit passport renewal applications more than one year in advance of the expiration. Exceptions to these rules may apply in emergency situations. These measures will be in effect until at least August 31, 2024.
