Denmark: Certain Family Members Holding Permanent Residence Must Apply for New Residence Card

Due to a move to residence cards with an electronic chip, the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) is invalidating certain permanent residence cards for family members as follows: residence cards issued to third-country family members of EU citizens before 1998 will become invalid from August 3, 2023; and residence cards issued to third-country family members of non-EU citizens between 1998 to 2011 and August 3, 2016 to August 3, 2021, will become invalid from August 3, 2026. Foreign nationals with invalidated residence cards will not lose their right of residence in Denmark but not having a valid residence card may present identification issues upon entry or in Denmark. As a result of this change, affected foreign nationals in Denmark must apply for a new residence card (and will be exempt from the government processing fee). Those whose residence cards become invalid while they are overseas must apply for a re-entry permit at a Danish consular post.
