A provisional political agreement between the European Commission and the European Parliament was reached to introduce a framework to adequately establish and improve minimum wage protection (“Directive on adequate minimum wages in the European Union”). The new Directive, once adopted, will not require EU Member States to introduce statutory minimum wages, nor will it establish a common minimum wage level across the European Union. However, EU Member States with statutory minimum wages may be required to implement certain measures in their governance framework for setting and updating minimum wages. The political agreement is subject to formal approval by the co-legislators and the Directive will enter into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal, at which time EU Member States will be required to transpose the provisions of the Directive into national law within two years.
