Fragomen Webcast: The Windrush Betrayal with Author Amelia Gentleman

In 2018 it was uncovered that members of the UK’s Windrush generation had been wrongly detained, denied legal rights, threatened with deportation, and, in at least 83 cases, wrongly deported from the UK by the Home Office. Many of those affected had been born British subjects and had arrived in the UK before 1973, particularly from Caribbean countries. Dubbed the Windrush generation, they were named after the Empire Windrush, the ship that brought one of the first groups of West Indian migrants to the UK in 1948.

Amelia Gentleman is an award-winning journalist for The Guardian. In 2018 Amelia broke the story of the Windrush scandal, leading to political upheaval and unprecedented scrutiny on the operations of the Home Office. Amelia’s subsequent book, ‘The Windrush Betrayal: Exposing the Hostile Environment’ earned great reviews from across the media and politics.

Please join Fragomen and Amelia for a 60-minute discussion as she talks about how she came to be involved in the story, the impact of the “hostile environment” on the Windrush generation and the response from government.
