The situation
The Southern Indian state of Kerala, including the province of Kochi, has experienced unprecedented rainfall this year resulting in widespread flooding that has affected transportation, power and water supplies. It has also resulted in the temporary closure of government offices in this region and a Red Alert in affected areas. Cochin International Airport has suspended operations for at least 10 days.
Impact
- Processing delays. Though electronic services have been implemented at the Foreigners’ Regional Registration (FRRO) Office in Kochi and at Foreigners’ Registration (FRO) Offices in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, processing delays are to be expected in both locations. The FRRO in Kochi is expected to remain closed until early next week while the FROs in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode are open with minimal support staff and may close without prior notice.
