Israel: Cancellation of Automatic Extension of Asylum Seekers’ Visas

The Ministry of Interior has canceled the automatic extension of asylum seekers’ visas. As a result, asylum seekers must renew their visas at the Population facility in Bnei Brak or in Eilat after they receive a text message from the Population and Immigration Authority. Although certain asylum seekers (such as Eritrean and Sudanese nationals who are sheltered under “group protection”) who do not renew their visas will not face immediate deportation, employers must ensure that their foreign employees have a valid visa allowing them to work in Israel. However, other nationalities seeking asylum who do not benefit from such protection can be deported. Further, the non-renewal of a visa prevents asylum seekers from receiving minimal social services and access to bank accounts.
