Italy: New Limitation on Citizenship Qualification for Descendants of Italian Citizens Born Outside Italy

A new law states that, effective immediately, Italy now considers descendants of Italian citizens born outside Italy as Italian citizens only if they have a parent or a grandparent who was born in Italy, or if they have a parent who has lived in Italy for two continuous years before their birth. Great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents have been eliminated as viable options for those individuals to qualify for citizenship in Italy. This rule applies to those who applied for citizenship on March 28, 2025 or later.
