Germany’s public sector is facing an urgent staffing crisis. With around 570,000 positions currently vacant and hundreds of thousands more expected by 2030, municipalities are struggling to maintain services. In an article for Kommunal topinform, Fragomen notes that the shortage is compounded by an ageing workforce, with nearly half a million municipal employees set to retire in the next decade.
International recruitment offers one avenue to address this challenge. While legal and procedural requirements are complex, municipalities that begin planning early and provide support such as part-time language training can ease integration and strengthen their workforce. Skilled workers from abroad bring fresh perspectives and can help secure the future of public services.
