Mexico/Peru: Suspension of Diplomatic Ties May Affect Immigration Processing
November 7, 2025

Peru has suspended diplomatic relations with Mexico following Mexico’s decision to grant political asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who faces criminal charges in Peru. The following are noted current disruptions as a result of this situation:
- Mexican consular services in Lima. The Mexican Embassy in Lima has been closed for at least three days; individuals with applications at the Mexican Embassy in Lima, including those seeking Mexican visas and work permits, as well as legalization services and assistance for Mexican nationals, should expect processing delays.
- Peruvian consular services in Mexico. Peruvian consular posts in Mexico may be experiencing temporary closures or service interruptions.
The situation remains fluid, and we are monitoring developments on a day-to-day basis until operations resume. We will provide updates as new information becomes available.
