Peru: Increased Scrutiny of Immigration Documents and New Law for Landlords of Foreign Nationals

The Peruvian government has published a new decree aimed at improving national security that increases the discretionary powers of immigration authorities at entry points. Foreign nationals traveling to Peru should ensure they carry the proper documentation: visa holders should carry their valid visa and valid local identification card (if applicable), and those entering for business or tourism should be prepared to explain the purpose of their trip and intended length of stay in Peru. Additionally, under the new decree, landlords in Peru must now check a foreign national’s legal status in Peru before signing a lease agreement and notify the National Superintendence of Immigration of the lease agreement. Foreign nationals should ensure that the immigration officers at the port of entry correctly record their entry status in their passport when entering Peru, which can serve as evidence of status if seeking to enter into a lease agreement.
