Peru: Visa-Free Entry Reinstated for Mexican Nationals

The situation
The government of Peru has reversed its decision to implement a visa requirement for nationals of Mexico traveling to Peru for tourism or business and reinstated the visa-free entry policy for these nationals.
Background
- Reciprocal visa exemption revocation. The visa requirement for Mexican nationals was announced by the Peruvian government on April 8, 2024, as a reciprocal measure following the visa requirement for Peruvian nationals announced by Mexico three days earlier.
- Reason for reversal. According to the government of Peru, the decision to reinstate the visa-free policy responds to concerns voiced by relevant tourism sector stakeholders, as well as the country’s commitments to the Pacific Alliance (a Latin America trade bloc formed by Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru).
Impact
Foreign nationals from Mexico traveling to Peru for tourism or business will continue to find a streamlined entry process as they will not be required to obtain a visa from the consulate and will be able to continue to enter Peru without a visa for tourism or business for up to 183 days within a one-year period.
Looking ahead
Currently, Mexico is still set to implement the visa requirement for nationals of Peru traveling to Mexico for tourism or business on April 20, 2024.
