Tanzania: Compulsory Insurance for Visitors Forthcoming

Update October 7, 2026: Tanzania has extended the mandatory inbound travel insurance requirement to foreign nationals entering mainland Tanzania (including Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Dodoma). However, residents of East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states are exempt from the mainland requirement. Travelers can purchase the insurance through the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) portal if entering mainland Tanzania or the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) portal if entering Zanzibar. Those visiting both destinations only need to purchase one policy, depending on where they first arrive. For stays exceeding 92 days, travelers insured through NIC can arrange an extension directly with NIC before their policy expires. However, ZIC policies are non-renewable. 

August 21, 2024: Effective September 1, 2024, all visitors to Zanzibar will be required to pay a USD 44 fee for insurance to enter the island (the fee must be paid online though the website has not yet been published). The insurance will cover visits of up to 92 days (information on whether the insurance must be renewed for trips longer than 92 days has not been published) and must be paid irrespective of whether the traveler has other valid travel insurance. The insurance would cover healthcare, loss of baggage, accidents, emergency evacuation, loss of passports and repatriation of remains in case of death.
