Uganda: New Electronic Chip Passport Application Center Opened

The Ugandan government opened an electronic chip (e-passport) application center in Mainland China on May 22, 2023, for all Ugandans living and working in the country, as part of the e-passport launch in December 2022. Ugandans in Mainland China can apply for an e-passport online to pay passport-related fees and schedule in-person appointments instead of traveling back to Uganda to apply for a passport. All valid machine-readable passports without an electronic chip will remain valid until expiry. The Directorate of Immigration and Citizenship Control plans to open e-passport centers in countries such as Canada, South Africa, and the United States as part of the program to eliminate machine-readable passports that do not contain an electronic chip.
