Congratulations to our Partner Careen Shannon for winning the NYC Mayoral Service Recognition Award that recognizes New York City’s most engaged individuals for their outstanding volunteer service. This year the award honored 75 winners who were chosen from over 3,500 nominations.
Careen serves on the Board of Directors of Safe Passage Project, which nominated her for this award. Safe Passage is a nonprofit organization that works with volunteer attorneys to provide free legal assistance to indigent immigrant children living in New York.
At Safe Passage Project, Careen volunteered significant time, and drew on her substantial professional knowledge and experience, in screening and representing immigrant children and providing advice and counsel to the organization. Since 2014, she has also spearheaded a pro bono project to partner lawyers in Fragomen’s New York office with Safe Passage Project to volunteer at the juvenile priority docket in Immigration Court and to take on individual cases.
In 2016, Careen volunteered more than 100 hours with Safe Passage alone, in addition to hundreds of hours of other pro bono activities on behalf of Fragomen and with other nonprofit organizations.
