In Memoriam of Founding Partner Alfred J. Del Rey, Jr. (1946-2019)

Mr. Alfred J. Del Rey, Jr. (“AJ”), one of the founding partners of Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, passed away on June 23, 2019 in New York, NY. AJ joined the firm in 1970 after law school and served as a partner until 2003. AJ has been widely recognized for his extensive contributions to the immigration field and a generation of lawyers and practitioners that followed in his footsteps. 

 

As one of the firm’s leaders, AJ helped guide the firm during a period of considerable growth. His activities in the field of immigration and nationality law included publishing numerous articles in law reviews, law journals and other publications related to the field. He co-authored definitive texts and handbooks still used by lawyers and human resource professionals today. He also served as an adjunct law professor at NYU School of Law, St. John's University School of Law, and Rutgers Law School. 

 

 

Following his retirement, AJ gave his time to public service matters such as working as a court-appointed legal guardian and trustee in the Bronx, NY and also acted as a FINRA arbitrator. AJ took a genuine interest in getting to know people and regularly went above and beyond to support those around him. 

 

What was most important to AJ was his family. AJ spent significant time devoted to his loving wife Jenny and his sons Jonathan, Brian, Maximillian, and Alexander, and his seven grandchildren, among many extended family members. AJ was predeceased by his son Alfred III and his first-born grandchild, Alfred IV. 

 

In recent years, AJ was honored by his law school, St. John's University School of Law, as a distinguished alumnus in the field of International Law.
