Argentina has announced plans for a new citizenship by investment programme, although the detailed legal and operational framework has not yet been finalised. Applications may open before the end of 2026, subject to further government guidance and implementation. If introduced as anticipated, the programme could create a new option for internationally mobile individuals and families considering their citizenship and mobility strategies.

Under the proposed framework, foreign nationals will be able to pursue Argentine citizenship through a USD 350,000 non-refundable government contribution or a USD 800,000 government bond subscription, with additional contributions applicable to eligible family members.

The programme is expected to provide a route to citizenship without the standard two-year residence period ordinarily associated with naturalisation. However, the eligibility criteria, evidence requirements, application process, processing times and precise legal effect of the new route have not yet been confirmed.

Why Consider Argentine Citizenship?

The Argentine passport offers access to more than 140 destinations without obtaining a traditional visa in advance, depending on the destination's entry requirements.

Notably, Argentine citizens benefit from short-stay visa-free travel to Europe's Schengen Area, generally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Argentine passport holders also enjoy visa-free short-stay access to destinations including the United Kingdom and Japan, subject to applicable electronic travel authorizations and entry conditions.

For internationally active individuals and families, this mobility can provide meaningful practical advantages, particularly where existing nationality limits travel flexibility.

One of the most distinctive advantages of Argentine citizenship is its regional significance.

As a member of MERCOSUR, Argentina forms part of a regional framework facilitating movement and residence across participating South American countries.

Argentine nationals can benefit from facilitated residence arrangements in countries such as Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, subject to the applicable national immigration procedures.

For those with commercial interests in Latin America, or families considering future relocation within the region, this offers an additional dimension of flexibility beyond visa-free tourism.
