Botswana/Namibia: Use of National Identity Cards for Cross-Border Travel

Update July 21, 2023: Based on clarification from border officials, each country now accepts each other’s national identity cards for use in cross-border business and tourism travel for up to 30 days each stay, limited to 90 days per year. For longer stays, travelers must apply for a business visa or work authorization.

Starting February 24, 2023, Namibia and Botswana will accept each other's national identity cards for use in cross-border business and tourism travel for stays up to 90 days. Nationals of each country can present this card to enter the other country without a passport. The card also serves as proof of immigration status for business travelers. This change is meant to increase the economic and regional connectivity of the two nations to further encourage orderly migration.
