Canada: Higher Financial Requirements for Study Permit Applicants in Quebec

Effective January 1, 2026, Quebec will significantly increase the minimum financial support requirements for study permit applicants, with some thresholds rising to more than three times their current levels. For instance, a single applicant (minor or an adult) will be required to demonstrate CAD 24,617 in available funds for living expenses, up from the current requirements of CAD 7,756 for applicants under the age of 18 and CAD 15,508 for those age 18 or older. The required amounts increase with each additional family member the applicant intends to bring with them. Full details and updated figures can be found here. The revised financial requirements will apply both to new international students applying for their first study permit and to current students seeking to extend the validity of their existing permit. Applicants to Quebec must demonstrate that they meet the applicable cost-of-living requirement at both the provincial and federal stages of the study permit process, at the time of initial application and again when applying for a renewal (if applicable), exclusive of tuition and travel costs. Acceptable proof of financial capacity includes bank statements or letters, student loan documents, scholarship letters and other relevant evidence.
