Canada: Transition to New Immigration Minister
July 26, 2023
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed Marc Miller as the new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), as part of a wide-ranging cabinet reshuffle. Former IRCC Minister Sean Fraser has been appointed Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, to help with the federal government’s focus on the Canadian economy and housing. Minister Miller was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2015, and most recently served as Minister of Indigenous Services. While outgoing Minister Fraser oversaw historically large increases in immigration quotas during his time at IRCC, it is not yet clear the approach that Minister Miller will take. The Minister of IRCC has the mandate to set immigration policy for the country, and as such, Fragomen will be monitoring the situation closely and report on any relevant updates as they occur.
