Canada: Visa Requirements Relaxed for Eligible Indonesian and Malaysian Travelers

Canada has updated its entry requirements for eligible citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia traveling to or transiting through the country by air. Effective May 26, 2026, travelers from these countries no longer need to obtain a temporary resident visa and may instead apply for an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), provided they have held a Canadian temporary resident visa within the past 10 years or currently hold a valid U.S. nonimmigrant visa. The eTA application is submitted online, costs CAD 7 and is generally approved within minutes, although some applications may require additional processing time if further information or documentation is requested. An approved eTA is typically valid for up to five years or until the traveler’s passport expires and generally allows stays of up to 180 days per visit. Travelers who do not meet the eligibility requirements for the eTA must continue applying for a temporary resident visa, which may take several weeks to a few months to process.
