Colombian Consulates in Venezuela and Venezuelan Consulates in Colombia Closed
March 4, 2019
The situation
-
Colombian consulates in Venezuela. According to an announcement on the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, due to the severance of the diplomatic relationship between Colombia and Venezuela, all Colombian consular posts in Venezuela are closed until further notice.
-
Venezuelan consulates in Colombia. Venezuelan consulates in Colombia are closed. Individuals seeking Venezuelan consular services in Colombia should contact their immigration professional for case-by-case advice.
Impact
Affected individuals seeking consular assistance in either country should contact their immigration provider to discuss possible alternatives for service.
-
For example, those who need to notarize a document in Colombia to be used in Venezuela may be able to obtain legalization by way of a local notary and apostille.
-
As another example, Colombian nationals in Venezuela seeking to register a newborn for purposes of obtaining Colombian citizenship must now leave Venezuela and register their child at a public notary in Colombia. Previously, they could register their newborn at a Colombian consulate in Venezuela.
For any other specific cases, please contact your immigration professional.
Looking ahead
There is no announced or expected timeframe for the reopening of these consular posts.
