Tourist Visa for Thailand: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process

Visa exemption for Thailand: Who can travel without a visa?

As part of Thai visa categories, nationals of 93 countries are entitled to a visa exemption for tourism purpose.

Foreign nationals who are not eligible for this exemption must apply for a visa for stays up to 60 days.

What is the Tourist Visa (TR)?

The tourist visa, also called visa TR, is a short-term visa that allows foreign nationals to enter Thailand for tourism, such as visiting friends or relatives.

It is typically issued for stays up to 60 days, with the option to extend for another 30 days through the Thai Immigration Bureau.

How long can you stay on a Thailand tourist visa?

This visa is intended for travelers who want to explore Thai culture, nature and hospitality without engaging in work or study.

The benefit is a short-term stay up to 60 days, extendable for a maximum of 30 days.

Depending on nationality, it is flexible for leisure, family visit or short-term exploration, with a simple process and straightforward application.

Who needs a tourist visa for Thailand?

For most nationalities, eligibility depends on the country of origin and passport requirements.

Some nationalities are visa exempt for short stays, while others must apply in advance.

The purpose of the visit must be for tourism or personal visit, not for work or study. No pay work is allowed, and employment is strictly prohibited.

Thailand tourist visa requirements: What documents are needed?

Visa requirements include completing an application form. Applications can be submitted via a Thai consulate or an e-visa portal.

A valid passport must have at least six months validity and at least one blank page.

Applicants must provide:

      • Recent passport-style photographs
      • Travel itinerary
      • Proof of return or onward travel

Additional documents may include:

      • Accommodation details such as hotel booking or invitation letter from a host in Thailand
      • Financial proof such as a bank statement showing sufficient funds
      • Travel insurance or proof of purpose of travel

How to apply for a Thailand tourist visa

The application process typically follows three steps:

      1. Confirm if your nationality requires a visa
      2. Complete the application and gather required documents
      3. Submit the application

Applications can be submitted through a Thai consulate or online via the e-visa portal to the Thai embassy in your country of residence.

Thailand tourist visa fees and processing time

Fees vary by nationality and consulate. Most accept online payment, with a few exceptions requiring offline or in-person payment.

Processing typically takes approximately 15 working days.

It is recommended to stay in the country from the time of visa filing until visa issuance.
