European Union/Ukraine: Temporary Protection Status May Be Extended Until March 2024
October 11, 2022

EU authorities are starting to plan an extension of Temporary Protection Status until March 2024, from March 2023. Under the potential changes, individuals holding Temporary Protection Status and seeking to return to Ukraine would not be required to deregister when leaving their host EU Member State and instead would only be required to notify the national or local authorities that issued the Temporary Protection Status of their departure. This would allow individuals to retain their Temporary Protection Status and to account for potential worsening of the situation in Ukraine that would require them to return to the EU Member State. The European Commissioner for Home Affairs is expected to tackle these suggested changes in the upcoming Justice and Home Affairs Council on October 13, 2022. We will report on related developments.
