Finland: A1 Certificate Now Recommended for Short Trips Outside Finland
February 27, 2023
Due to an increase in employees in Finland working abroad for a short period of time, the Finnish Centre for Pensions has published guidance stating that employers should now also apply for an A1 certificate for their employees for short work trips as well as business trips abroad. In principle, an A1 certificate may even be required for one day of work abroad. The Certificate of Coverage (known as A1 certificate in the European Union) is issued by the Finnish Centre for Pensions and shows that the worker is covered by the Finnish social security legislation when they travel to an EU country or a country with which Finland has social security agreements. Employees who take frequent trips abroad during the year may be able to submit a single application for an A1 Certificate, which in some cases can be issued for up to two years.
