In New York, our firm assisted 65 Temporary Protected Status (TPS) applicants from Nepal with maintaining their status to remain in the U.S.
Nepal was designated a foreign country for TPS, a humanitarian form of relief, after the country was struck with a disastrous earthquake last year. TPS allows Nepali nationals who were already in the U.S. when the program was announced and could prove their physical presence for a certain period of time to remain in the United States and obtain a work permit.
With the goal of assisting such applicants, we formed a coalition with The Legal Aid Society, Urban Justice Center, and the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), coordinated by the New York Immigration Coalition. This coalition aimed at staffing TPS clinics at Adhikaar, a New York-based non-profit organization working with the Nepali-speaking community to promote human rights and social justice, which conducts TPS screenings and application assistance clinics.
Our firm not only staffed the clinics at Adhikaar, but also set up its own clinic at City Bar Justice Center, and helped with a clinic run by the law firm O’Melveny & Myers and global insurer ACE as part of their “Day of Giving.”
