Fragomen Policy Paper: Family Reunion Visa Options for Parents in Germany

In Germany, options for obtaining a family reunion visa for family members other than spouses, minor children and parents of minor children are currently very limited, with residence permits for parents or parents-in-law only granted to avoid "exceptional hardship."

However, beginning 01 March 2024, a new option for family reunions for the parents or parents-in-law of principal applicants will become available. In this policy paper, Manager Dr. Adela Schmidt summarises the new option, outlining who is entitled to a family reunion, the approved residence permits, and other important considerations for those interested.
