Germany: Replacement of Traditional Children’s Passports with Biometric Equivalents in 2024

Effective January 1, 2024, a law will go into effect which will replace the issuance of all traditional children's passports (for individuals under the age of 24) with biometric passports. The new passport will include a digital chip and fingerprint information, and have a longer validity period of six years, up from one year. Furthermore, the new passports will be accepted in countries that require biometric passports, including Australia and the United States. The new passports will cost EUR 37.50. Generally, traditional children’s passports issued prior to January 1, 2024 will remain valid until the printed date of expiry.
