Guyana: Work Permit Processing Time Reduced; New Application Requirements for Dependents and Added Restrictions for Renewal

Based on verbal communications by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry has implemented several key changes to the work permit process in Guyana. First, the Ministry has stated that it expects to adjudicate immigration applications (including Permissions to Land, initial and renewal Work Permits, and Employment Visas on Arrival, among others) within 14 business days after payment of government fees (down from the current 30 business days). Additionally, the Ministry is enforcing the rule for dependent visa applications (called Family Extensions) to only be filed once the principal has had their Work Permit endorsed on their passport. Lastly, Work Permit renewal applications are now accepted by the Ministry within one month in advance of the work permit expiration date, instead of the prior three months. Foreign nationals should ensure they file their renewal application promptly.
