Holiday Closures at Labor Department Require Early Work Permit Application Submission

As Papua New Guinea’s labor department prepares to close for the holiday season, initial work permit applications must be submitted by November 27, 2015 and renewal applications must be submitted by December 18, 2015. The Department will close for the holiday season on December 19, 2015, and will resume accepting applications on January 6, 2016.
What This Means for Employers and Foreign Nationals
During the holiday closure period, foreign employees should:
- File new work permit applications by November 27, 2015. Those who fail to do so can file their applications once the labor department resumes work on January 6, 2016.
- Renew work permits set to expire by February 2016 by December 18, 2015. Those who fail to do, or whose renewals are not approved by December 18, 2015, must leave Papua New Guinea and apply for a new work permit abroad.
Those who overstay their work permit validity periods may face fines.
