Hungary: Guest Worker Program Ends

Effective June 6, 2026, Hungary has ceased accepting guest worker residence permit applications. Current permit holders may continue to apply for extensions or re-issuance; and applications submitted and paid for by June 5, 2026 will be processed.  
 
The guest worker residence permit program provided an immigration pathway for talent engaged in projects of strategic significance for the Hungarian economy. The ending of this program signals a pivot by the government to focus instead on Residence Permits for Employment Purposes, requiring direct employment by a Hungarian employer under a local contract and payroll.
