Japan: Electronic Tourist Visa Availability Expanded to Several Countries
November 21, 2024

Update β November 21, 2024: The Japanese government has expanded its electronic visa (eVISA) program to individuals from Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Macau SAR, and the Republic of Korea (excluding applicants under the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Japan in Jeju) who are required to obtain a short-term visa, arriving by plane or specific international passenger ferries (i.e., those between Japan and Busan or Shanghai). The eVISA is typically issued as a single-entry visa for tourism purposes, allowing a stay of up to 90 days. Vietnamese nationals residing in Vietnam can also apply for a 15-day eVISA if they participate in tour packages organized by designated travel agencies. Chinese nationals residing in China are eligible for eVISAs with stays of 15 or 30 days. Foreign nationals from the above-named countries must apply for eVISAS through an accredited agency. Foreign nationals planning to engage in business and/or work activities are advised to apply for the appropriate visa to ensure compliance, as the eVISA is intended for tourism purposes only.
April 3, 2023: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced that nationals and residents of Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States who are required to obtain a short-term visa can now apply for an electronic tourist visa to Japan. This visa permits a single entry stay of up to 90 days for tourism and is valid for three months from the date of issuance. Applicants must submit their application via Japan eVISA website and show the "Visa Issuance Notice" at the airport before departure. Additionally, applicants must make in-person cash payments at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General, unless the specific Embassy or Consulate General in that country allows online payment or exempts fees.
