Kenya: Old Generation Passport to Expire in November 2022

A new East African Community (EAC) biometric e-passport will be implemented in Kenya effective November 30, 2022. The e-passport contains identical data from the passport booklet but will be held on a microchip and be used to verify the information displayed in the booklet. This e-passport is intended to curb fraud and tampering with information contained in the passport. Kenyans should acquire the e-passport before the deadline to avoid potential travel issues (though note Kenyans may not need a passport to enter some EAC countries). Kenyan nationals living abroad seeking to acquire a new e-passport can visit a Kenyan embassy in their country of residence or one of the service centres in Nakuru, Kisii, Eldoret and Embu in Kenya, or in Berlin, Paris, London, Washington DC, Dubai or Johannesburg. Other EAC member states (which includes Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda) have their own country-specific deadlines to implement e-passports for their nationals.
