New Monthly Fee to Employ Foreign Nationals

Bahrain now requires companies operating in the country to pay a monthly fee to employ foreign nationals. The amount payable depends on the number of foreign expatriates an entity employs. The fee is paid to the Labor Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), the main immigration authority in Bahrain.
The LMRA charges five Bahraini Dinar (approximately US$13) for each of the first five foreign nationals employed by a company and ten Dinar for each additional foreign employee. It is essential that these fees are paid on a monthly basis to avoid fines or sanctions.
Previously, the LMRA charged a similar fee, but the payment requirement was suspended in 2011, to lower operating expense burdens for companies. The monthly fees were reintroduced in September 2013.
