Panama: Streamlined Work Authorization Process for SEM Dependents Implemented
January 13, 2023
Dependents of SEM Visa holders in Panama who are eligible to apply for work authorization under an existing work permit category are now eligible for a streamlined work authorization process. These individuals can now apply directly at the special SEM processing desk at the Ministry of Commerce where their applications will be processed faster. Previously, these individuals were required to obtain a visa at the National Immigration Service and a separate work permit processed with the Ministry of Labor, which could take up to four months to complete the process. The streamlined work authorization process for SEM dependents was originally announced by the government in October of 2020 and set to take effect in December of that year; however, the Ministry of Labor did not implement the process until now, likely due to high unemployment, change management issues and high demand at the Ministry of Labor stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Interested applicants should contact their immigration professional for case-specific advice.
