All residence permits that have expired, or will expire by October 15, 2025, have been automatically extended until October 15, 2025. These extensions are only valid within Portugal. Accordingly, travel outside Portugal (including the Schengen Area) is not advised. This extension – which continues several earlier extensions for the same reason – comes amid an administrative backlog. Additionally, the permit renewal process is now being handled by the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA), as opposed to the Institute of Registries and Notary (IRN). AIMA is establishing various dedicated online solutions for the renewal process. Foreign nationals should note that long-term residence visas are not affected by the above extensions, and such visa-holders must apply to extend their visas.
