Sweden: Citizenship Rule Changes Under Consideration
May 23, 2023
Several citizenship-related proposals were submitted to the Swedish government. If adopted, the rules would require citizenship applicants to reside in Sweden for more than the current requirement of five years before being eligible for citizenship (the exact amount of time has not yet been published); would implement minimum funds and minimum knowledge of the Swedish language requirements; would implement an interview requirement; and would implement stricter criminal background checks for applicants. Additionally, there may be new rules regarding revocation of citizenship, though this would require a constitutional amendment and could take several years. We will monitor developments about these proposals, which are expected to be published in the coming months.
