
As of October 19, 2023, Swedish immigration authorities require Standard Industrial Classification (SNI) codes (which designate an employer's field or fields of industry) to be provided as part of any work permit application (except researchers). Previously, such codes were not required. Work permit applications which lack SNI code information will now not be accepted. This change is part of Sweden's new tiered work permit application regime (scheduled to come into effect in 2024) which divides work permit applications into four categories. The SNI codes are used to designate the category under which an application would qualify โ for instance, whether an applicant qualifies under the highly-skilled Category A pathway (mandating expedited processing) or under Category D (mandating increased scrutiny of the application and longer processing times).
