Temporary Residence Permit Applicants to Receive New Proof of Status Document

Foreign nationals approved for new employer-sponsored Temporary Residence Permits will receive a Temporary Residence Card at the time of approval, which will serve as proof of immigration status. Local identification cards (cédulas) will no longer be issued, according to a formal notice sent to public entities that request a cédula as identification for foreign nationals. Foreign nationals typically require a cédula to open a local bank account, file tax returns, obtain a driver’s license and conduct social security transactions.
Foreign nationals currently holding a valid cédula do not need to apply for the new card – they will receive another cédula upon renewing their residence permit.
Foreign nationals applying under other categories, such as residence based on investment or family relationship with a Dominican national, will still receive a cédula.
Foreign nationals can still apply for a Permanent Residence Permit after four successive renewals of the Temporary Residence Permit.
What This Means for Foreign Nationals
Foreign nationals affected by this change in documentation may experience difficulties proving their identification to certain entities, as not all entities may be aware of the change during the implementation of the new rule. Therefore, affected foreign nationals are advised to present their passports, and/or other proof of immigration status when requested.
