Uganda: Foreign Nationals Required to Register and Obtain Alien Identification Card

Effective June 10, 2026, all foreign nationals working, studying or residing in Uganda, excluding those entering and staying in the country for less than 90 days, will be required to register and obtain an Alien Identification Card (also known as an identity card) from the Ugandan National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA). The card will now be required for foreign nationals to obtain public services. To obtain the card, foreign nationals must visit a NIRA registration center in Uganda or the Ministry of Internal Affairs with their valid passport, entry visa and work permit/pass and pay an amount of USD 100 as part of the prescribed registration fee. This mandatory registration requirement forms part of Uganda's efforts to strengthen its national identity system by ensuring that foreign nationals have lawful access to public services.
