Nauru has been added to the visa national list, and consequently removed from the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) eligibility list. This is subject to transitional provisions whereby Nauruian nationals who have a confirmed travel booking prior to the time of implementation of this policy can still travel to the United Kingdom within a period of six weeks from December 9, 2025, with ETA applications for such travel permissible until January 20, 2026. This change follows concerns about the security of the UK border following the introduction by Nauru of a Citizenship by Investment program, where the only requirement is a one-off payment to Nauru and which is managed by a private agency that receives commission for each successful application it proposes. The UK government regards the scheme as open to abuse by criminal elements and an aid to fugitives in flight.
