The United Kingdom will rejoin the European Union’s Erasmus+ student exchange scheme from 2027, meaning that UK students involved in education, training, culture and sport will be able to spend a year studying at EU universities that have partnered under the scheme. The United Kingdom left the program as part of Brexit, and this latest development highlights broader recent efforts by both the European Union and the United Kingdom to establish closer ties.
The Erasmus+ scheme – which first started in 1987 – allows university students from participating European countries to study or undertake internships abroad in other European countries for between two and 12 months, with participants receiving grants for travel and living costs and receiving university credits for the courses taken during the exchange.
The UK government has highlighted that it will appoint a National Agency to deliver Erasmus+ for the United Kingdom. The website with further information will be launched by the UK’s National Agency by August 2026.
