Uruguay: Delays in Renewals of Local Identification Cards
October 7, 2025
Uruguay’s National Directorate of Civil Identification has significantly reduced appointment availability for urgent renewals of Uruguayan Identity Cards (Cédulas de Identidad), resulting in longer processing times. Previously, applicants could make an appointment for an Urgent Identity Card renewal and be issued the card within 24 hours; currently, to obtain an appointment, they must schedule it two to three months in advance, extending the overall renewal process. While foreign nationals may continue to live and work in Uruguay with a valid residence permit or renewal in process, delays in obtaining an Identity Card can cause administrative challenges, including difficulty opening bank accounts or accessing education and healthcare services. Employers and foreign nationals are advised to plan renewals well in advance to accommodate reduced appointment flexibility and avoid disruptions.
