At a Glance

  • Argentina has announced details of its Citizenship by Investment Program, with applications expected to open before year-end.
  • Foreign nationals will be able to apply through a USD 350,000 non-refundable contribution or a USD 800,000 government bond subscription, with additional contributions for eligible family members.
  • The program will offer qualifying investors and their families a route to Argentine citizenship without the standard two-year residence requirement, subject to financial and security screening.
  • Further guidance is expected to clarify application procedures, processing times and additional eligibility requirements.

The situation

Argentina’s government has announced investment thresholds and initial details for its Citizenship by Investment Program, which is expected to begin accepting applications during the fourth quarter of 2026.

A closer look

  • Investment options. Foreign nationals will be able to choose between two investment options:
    • A direct, non-refundable contribution of USD 350,000 to the National Treasury; or
    • Subscription to a government bond worth USD 800,000, created specifically for the program.
  • Eligible family members. Spouses and children of principal applicants can apply as dependents under the principal applicant, subject to proof of their relationship to the principal applicant and the following additional Treasury contributions:
    • Spouse: USD 100,000
    • Child aged 18-25 who is unmarried and has no children: USD 100,000
    • Child under the age of 18: USD 25,000
  • Financial and security screening. According to the government announcement, funds must pass through the banking or financial institutions authorized by the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic and meet anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism financing and financial transparency requirements. Applicants will undergo identity, source-of-funds, financial, jurisdictional risk, criminal, reputational and immigration history checks.
  • Application review. Argentina’s Agency for Citizenship by Investment Programs will assess applications with input from intelligence, financial, security and interior authorities, then recommend approval or refusal to the National Immigration Directorate for a final decision. Details about filing procedures, supporting document requirements and overall processing times are likely forthcoming.

Impact

The program will offer qualifying investors and their families a direct route to Argentine citizenship without the standard two-year residence requirement, expanding investment-linked citizenship options in Latin America.

Background

  • Immigration reform. The citizenship by investment pathway was introduced through a 2025 decree as part of a broader immigration overhaul that strengthened immigration controls, revised foreign nationals’ access to public services and changed citizenship procedures.
  • Investment attraction. The latest announcement sets investment amounts and a planned application-opening period, advancing implementation and supporting the government’s broader efforts to position Argentina as an open destination for international investment.

Looking ahead

Further rules and operational guidance are likely forthcoming ahead of the planned opening. These are expected to clarify the application process, documentation, fees, bond conditions and any additional eligibility or physical presence requirements.

Fragomen will monitor implementation and report on relevant developments.
